Norma Joan (Roberts) Thornton, of Eminence, Missouri, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 29, 1948, in Pine, Missouri, and lived a life marked by strength, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to Education.

She was the devoted wife of William "Leon" Thornton. The two were married on May 22, 1972, and shared 53 years of love, partnership, and devotion. Together they built a home filled with laughter, books, and lasting memories.

A proud graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Joan earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees before devoting more than four decades of service to the Winona School District. Throughout her 40+ year career, she held numerous roles-including English teacher, Science teacher, remedial reading specialist, and principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Norma's leadership and commitment to her students left a lasting mark on the community she served with grace and humility.

Outside the classroom, Joan found joy in the simple, beautiful things in life. She was an avid reader with a deep love of literature, a gardener who took pride in her flowers and vegetables, and a lifelong animal lover-especially of cats, who were always close by.

Norma was a cherished wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her strength of character and quiet generosity defined her life. She will be remembered for her devotion to education, her love for her family and community, and her enduring kindness, strength, and warmth.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Leon Thornton; her son, Bruce Thornton; her sibling, Bob Roberts; and many extended family members, colleagues, and friends who were touched by her life.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Thornton; her parents, William "Bill" Roberts and Verna (Miller) Roberts; and her siblings, Joyce Sammons, Jan Garcia, June Leech, Joe Roberts, and Joy Roberts.

All who knew and loved Joan are invited to gather in celebration of a remarkable life lived with purpose, humility, and love.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Yarber Mortuary, Eminence, Missouri, with Bro. Alan Stringer officiating.
