A farmer at heart he graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1992 and enjoyed working until retirement in 2011 as County Executive Director for the Farm Service Agency. Over the years he drove an ambulance, hauled pallets, worked at Harvey's, helped at Circle B, showed many to skate, logged a bit, taught at school, worked in banking, operated his dozer, built things, fixed things, managed his personal farms and tackled any problem that came his way with determination, wisdom, and mostly good humor.
